Tuberculosis is a type of bacterial infection that typically affects the lungs. It is caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis and is spread through the air from one person to another. Most people who are infected with it harbor the bacterium without symptoms of tuberculosis (known as latent tuberculosis), but some will develop active tuberculosis. Prevention of this disease focuses on reducing exposure to infected individuals, getting the vaccine, and administering preventive treatment to people with a positive TB test without symptoms.
